In the past, I've talked about PC security and said that it's ok to have more than one security resource (anti-virus, anti-malware) application running on your PC. Here's another one that won't hurt and it looks like it actually helps. Microsoft Security Essentials is a replacement for Microsoft Live One Care. Live One Care was a subscription service and Security Essentials is being offered for free.
Microsoft is offering the service free of charge and wants users to know that it's still in beta. I have had it installed for about two weeks now and don't see any adverse effects. It is supposed to be "gentle" with the processor memory and usage and I really don't see any impact at all. I'm running MS Vista and have a lot of RAM so that might be the reason it's running so well on my machine.
I have let the application run in the background and almost forgot that it was there, it automatically downloads and installs definitions and scans my internet usage as well as my emails, both incoming and outgoing.
I guess Microsoft is going to incorporate more into this application for future releases, phishing filters and such, but as of today, it's doing what it is supposed to do and doing it without impacting my computing.
I have to say that I would suggest it for anyone using a personal computer for home use. Caveat: I just checked on the availability to download the beta and Microsoft has stopped offering it to testers. Check back often for the official release.
As always,
Safe Surfing
