Identity theft victim's statement of rights

Several federal laws protect victims of identity theft. These laws have to do with documenting the theft; dealing with credit reporting companies; dealing with creditors, debt collectors, and merchants; and limiting your financial losses caused by the theft of your identity.

This last week my sister forwarded an email to me relating to self protection from identity theft and it's been a great article for a quite a while now. In that article there are some great ways to protect yourself and recover from identity theft.

First, know what's in your wallet or purse, make copies of both sides of your credit cards, forms of identification and social security card. Know where and how to contact the credit organizations and keep the telephone numbers of them, your bank and other public and police agencies handy.

Know your rights, visit the Federal Trade Commissions explanation of your rights and review the page that describes these in detail.

Once again, safe surfing,
